Basketry stodio
ABOUT ME
I am David Grushko, a basketry artist who lives in Ofra, Israel (near Jerusalem). I was born in Paris and raised in the spirit of French æsthetics. At the age of 18, I began studying electronics, but I soon switched to homeopathy, which I practiced for about 20 years. In parallel I learned basketry techniques from Hertzel Auster, one of Israel’s foremost basket weavers.
Some of my works are geometric and symmetric, following a fixed pattern. while others are more abstract and free-flowing, each one unique and inimitable. I use a variety of weaving materials, both natural and artificial. to invite attention and evoke curiosity.
I produce a wide range of woven works: Simple baskets, designer baskets incorporating grapevines, woven trays and mandalas. some embodying a simple yet fascinating geometric structure and others combining a rush of power and fortitude, of color and movement.
Basketry Studio and workshop
Basket weaving is one of the oldest crafts in human culture. A few years ago, the oldest basket in the world was found in a cave in the Judean desert. A woven basket that is over 10,000 years old. Throughout history, baskets have been created for diverse purposes. From carrying food and water to storing goods and as decorative objects themselves. The history of basketry is a fascinating one. which spans thousands of years and combines a wide variety of materials, techniques and styles.
You are invited to visit my basketry studio in Ofra. Which is on the main road between Jerusalem and Shiloh. You will receive a full explanation of the weaving materials and techniques. Those interested are invited to try themselves in an experiential basket weaving workshop.
Weaving is an experiential and relaxing activity, an ancient craft from the days of the Bible.
Did you know that in the Mishnah and Talmud there are more than 20 different expressions to describe different types of baskets! Something that show the wide use of baskets in ancient times.
The workshop is a live encounter with natural materials. Learning and experiencing the use of palm branches and turning them into useful tools. Everyone leaves with a basket, a basket of their own hands. A fun activity for anyone who is curious and wants to get to know an ancient craft. The length of the workshops is from two hours to a whole day, according to your choice.
